For his part, Abimbola stated during interrogations that he was unaware of the girl’s age, expressing shock that she was on the platform in the first place.
He maintained that he was simply using the platform for leisure, adding that his actions were not borne out of any malicious intent.
“I met her on a dating app, I was surprised I could meet a little girl on the app. I was just there just to calm myself when I’m bored. I asked her for those images for her to stop chatting with me, I wanted to be sure if she was a child or not, that was why I asked her. I don’t deal with minors. If she had sent me those pictures, I will delete them.
“I said all those things for fun, I have a wife and I have two kids, I don’t do it,” he stated.

When asked if he knew he was abusing the child with the messages he was sending to her, he said, “If I want to abuse a child, I will send her my home address, I have never done that in my life. I was just saying all that for nothing sake.
“I am 43, I told her I was 24. It’s a dating app and they fake their age. She said on the dating app that she was 18, as they won’t allow you on the app unless you are 18 and above.”
Confronted that the girl told her real age regardless of the age on the dating app, he said, “I didn’t believe her, I thought it was just for fun.”
In the UK, under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, it is a crime for an adult to intentionally communicate, for example, by e-mail, text message, chat room, messenger service, written note or orally, with a child under 16, whom the adult does not reasonably believe to be aged 16 or over, for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification, if the communication is sexual or intended to encourage the child to make a communication that is sexual.
The law states that the maximum sentence for sexual communication with a child is 2 years in prison.
