No fewer than 174 students have bagged first-class honours as the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State held a graduation ceremony for 12,450 students.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo, disclosed this while providing a breakdown of the graduands at a pre-convocation briefing held in the university’s council chambers on Nwaniba Road, Uyo, on Tuesday.
He said, “This year’s convocation is yet another very significant milestone for this administration. It marks a combined ceremony of the 29th and 30th convocations of this great citadel of learning.

“The combined convocation has a total of 12,450 graduands. The breakdown is as follows: PhD – 303, Master’s Degree – 608, and Postgraduate Diploma – 246, bringing the total for postgraduate degrees to 1,167. For the 2020/2021 session, the bachelor’s degrees awarded include 56 first-class, 1,737 upper second-class, 2,336 lower second-class, 412 third-class, and 282 pass degrees, totalling 4,823. The diploma and certificate programmes have 176 and 5 graduands, respectively, bringing this subtotal to 5,004.
“For the 2021/2022 session, the bachelor’s degrees include 118 first-class, 2,306 upper second-class, 2,895 lower second-class, 481 third-class, and 212 pass degrees, totalling 6,012. The diploma programme has 235 graduands, and certificates add 32, bringing this session’s total to 6,279.”
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the total number of postgraduate graduands is 1,167; undergraduate graduands, 10,835; diploma graduands, 411; and certificate graduands, 37, making a grand total of 12,450.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that three eminent Nigerians—Chief Effiong Afiakure, Mrs Halima Zakaria, and Dr Itanwan James—would be awarded honorary degrees from the university.

He added that an honorary Professor Emeritus degree would be conferred upon Prof. Akpan Ekpo, a professor of Public Finance Policy, while honorary Distinguished Professor degrees would be awarded to three prominent professors of the university.
The distinguished professors include Prof. Enefiok Essien, SAN, Faculty of Law; Prof. Godfrey Udoh, Department of Estate Management; and Prof. Essien Urua, Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages.
The Vice-Chancellor used the occasion to highlight the university’s achievements since the start of his administration and listed challenges such as theft of equipment, inadequate funding, land encroachment, and a shortage of staff in critical fields due to the federal employment embargo.
