SSANU and NASU vow to continue ongoing strike despite FG’s payment of withheld salaries

Director, Press and Public Relations of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, who confirmed the development in a statement said  the payment to NASU members has commenced, with many already confirming receipts of the fund transfer.

“The Federal Government has (at last) released (the) funds for payment of the withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities and that of the retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

“Payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities have commenced and many have confirmed receipts”, the statement partly reads.

The unions, under JAC, began an indefinite strike on Monday due to four months of unpaid salaries, leading to a shutdown of university activities nationwide.

Reacting to the latest development, SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim said the government only released one out of the four months withheld salaries.

He noted that top university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, also hadn’t been paid, further impacting university operations.

He added that 98 per cent of members complied with the strike, and they would not return to work until their demands are met.

He also onfirmed that members had started receiving salaries, noted that only one out of the four months withheld salaries has been released.

“Yes, they paid one month out of four months. We shall be meeting to appraise the situation. Not everyone has received so far.”
